‘Welcome to Barnes Healing Church. Lovely to see so many of you here today,’ the tall Asian gentleman greeted them standing at the pulpit of the tiny church. ‘Our psychic this evening is Agnes Feltz. As some of you know, she is a local woman and frequent visitor to the church. Now if you’ll turn to page twenty-three of the book, we’ll begin with singing a song to raise the vibration. Give it all you’ve got so we get a good result today.’
‘You never said we’d have to sing,’ Louise hissed in Winnie’s ear. ‘I’m shit!’
‘Just try your best, Lou. It’s not Britain’s Got Talent. It’s to bring all the spirits knocking on the door!’
Louise rolled her eyes at Winnie and turned to the required page. ‘I Believe in Angels’ by ABBA. At least it wasn’t ‘Kum Ba Ja’…
When the congregation, for lack of a better word, had finished warbling through the verses, Agnes took to the front of the church, abstaining from using the pulpit. Necromancy could get her struck by a bolt of lightning, surely, Louise thought. Agnes was a slight woman in her early fifties with glossy brown bobbed hair wearing a fashionable black jumpsuit, just like the one from ASOS Louise had almost bought for Nigel’s funeral. Agnes didn’t fit the profile Louise had built up in her head of a typical psychic. She was expecting floating kaftans, gold hooped earrings and silk head scarves, not a slick Davina McCall. Louise couldn’t believe Winnie had talked her into it last week when she’d popped round for lunch…
‘A spiritual church? Why do you go there?’ Louise had asked. ‘It’s also miles away.’
‘Why do you think? To go pole dancing?’ Winnie snorted. ‘To get messages from Trevor.’
‘What? Honestly? But they’re all charlatans aren’t they, taking your money, playing on your insecurities?’
‘No! You pay a couple of quid towards the tea and coffee afterwards and that’s it. It’s just reassuring to receive a message when you really need one.’
‘But isn’t it all, “Oh, you left the car keys in the freezer” type of messages rather than “Heaven is real and being dead is better than being able to eat whatever you want and never getting fat”?’
‘Not always,’ Winnie had admitted. ‘But wouldn’t you be pleased if you genuinely had left your car keys in the freezer?’ She cut into her salmon fillet and pressed it onto her fork with the knife. ‘Why don’t you come with me next week? You could see for yourself.’
‘You have to be joking. I don’t want to sit there while Nigel berates me for ruining his lawn and refusing to weed the garden.’
‘I doubt Nigel will come through so soon after passing,’ Winnie mused. ‘You’d probably get a grandparent or spirit guide maybe…’
‘Winnie! I can’t believe you’re saying shit like that! As if I’d believe Nigel would follow me over to Barnes just to talk to me. He never liked West London. He was South East through and through.’
Winnie burst out laughing. ‘Oh, Lou Lou, it doesn’t matter where the church is.
