6 The Longest Lacings

In the following, we want to move in the opposite direction and, using a set of “lengthening rules”, identify the so-called devil n-lacing as the longest dense n-lacing of a given general n-shoe. We recommend that you review Section 5.3 on lacing general shoes before you read on, as we will assume familiarity with the terminology and arguments introduced there.

The “inverse” of the cross-straight shortening rule for general n-shoes, considered in the last chapter, is the straight-cross lengthening rule summarized in Figure 6.2.
