When Troy opened his front door and saw Helen, he blinked. “The Queen Mother comes to call.”

Helen shoved Ricky between them. “This is Ricky. He’s new here.”

“Welcome,” he squealed, wrapping Ricky in a hug. “I’m always glad to meet a new omega.”

Stepping back, he gushed, “Oh my gods, your hair! I would kill for hair like that. I’m so jealous. I’d hate you if you weren’t so cute.” He untied Ricky’s ponytail, staring at the string. “Hemp. That’s a butch choice.” He ran his fingers through the hair, fanning it out. “Beautiful. But what do you trim it with? A ceiling fan?”

Helen cleared her throat, knowing how easily Troy was distracted. “We need some advice.”

Troy gaped at Ricky’s neck. “Is that a mating mark? Did you marry an older man? Did he have his teeth in when he claimed you?” He stepped back. “You should have asked for my advice before the mating.”

“It’s Adam’s bite,” Helen said.

Confusion clouded Troy’s face. “Adam wears dentures?”

“It’s a long story. May we come in?”

Troy stepped out of the way. “Of course. I’m forgetting my manners. A beautiful head of hair always distracts me.” Troy lead them back to the kitchen. “You’re in luck. I was just chilling a new box of wine.” He grabbed three plastic tumblers and filled them with chardonnay. “Sorry for the glasses but with four pups we can’t have nice things.”

Ricky sniffed the liquid. “What is this?”

“It’s called wine,” Helen explained. “It’s made from fermented grapes.”

Troy leaned into Helen and whispered, “He doesn’t know what wine is? Is he Mormon?”

“It’s a long story. Just know Ricky was raised in a pack that foregoes human things.”

“Like wine?” Troy shivered. “How barbaric.”

“Not just wine,” Helen said. “Electricity and plumbing.”

Troy shook his head in disgust. “That’s almost as bad.” He placed his hand on Ricky’s knee. “Thank gods you escaped. How can I help?”

Ricky hesitated, hoping Helen would ask for him, but there was only silence. “Can you teach me how to flirt?”

Troy sat back in his seat, looking at his two guests. “Maybe I better hear the long story first.”

It took fifteen minutes (and one refill) to get through the tale. At the end, Troy was almost shocked into silence. Almost. “Mother of pearl, is that true?” he asked.

Helen nodded. “Who would make up a story like that?”

“I will,” Troy mumbled. “Why do you need my help?”

“You’re the expert on romance,” Helen replied.

Troy shook his head. “The omegas in my books are not flirty types. My characters try to deny their attraction right up to the point that the omega gets kidnapped by a motorcycle gang, or kidnapped for an auction, or kidnapped by a shifter pack without motorcycles.”

Ricky sighed. “So you don’t know how to flirt, either.”

“I know all about flirting, but my knowledge is dangerous in untrained hands.”

Helen needed a moment alone with Troy, so she opened the baby gate behind her. Every pup on Lone Wolves Ranch could recognize the sound of a gate opening, and soon three children raced into the kitchen, with the fourth crawling behind.
