Paul walked with Maeve back down to her house. âI canât believe you know Amanda,â he said.
âI could say the same thing.â Maeve nodded, her eyes twinkling. âIncredibly tiny world we live in. Everything is so connected if you look close enough.â
Thoughts were bumping through his mind. Amanda was here. He thought any hope of ever seeing her again was gone. âHowâd you meet her?â
âMet her on the beach, through Hailey and Jesse a few weeks ago. Such sweet children.â
âI was with Jack when I met her.â Paul looked out toward the water. âI remember it as clear as if it were today.â
âHow long ago was that?â Maeve asked.
âGosh, eleven years ago. They wouldâve been married seven years now. You know her husband died about two years ago, right?â
âI do.â
âWe were best friends, Jack and I.â He slowed his long stride for Maeve. âWe were together when we met Amanda. One of my favorite Skynyrd songs was playing. I asked her to dance. She was just so lighthearted and happy. Not like anyone Iâd ever met.â
âWhat was the song? Do you remember?â Maeve asked.
âI do. It was âWhatâs Your Name,â and we were singing along as it played. She reached up and whispered her name in my ear.â He inhaled, remembering the zing that had rolled him that night. âThen I spun her around.â Paul remembered every move, even the way she lowered her lashes when she politely laughed at his cornball jokes. âThe three of us were together all the time after that.â
âKindred spirits.â Maeve smiled gently. âSheâs a delight.â
âIâd never met anyone so truly happy to just breathe the air.â They turned up the beach toward Maeveâs house. âYou seriously walk this every day?â
âSure do.â
âIâm impressed.â
âWell, I am impressed with you too, Paul. Amanda doesnât know about Paws Town Square?â
âNo. She assumed Iâm working with the MP dogs in the same capacity as when she last saw me, and I didnât correct her. Iâm not sure how to tell her. Iâm afraid sheâll be disappointed in me for leaving the Marines.â
âWhy would she be? Youâre doing quite well.â
âHer husbandâ¦he gave his life for this country. We were Marines together. It should have been me. He had a family. He had her.â Paul took in a long breath. âAfter Jack died, and Amanda pushed me away, my whole life changed. It wasnât good for a while.â
âTell her.â Her jaw set. âDonât leave a thing out. Sheâll understand.â
He walked Maeve to the gate at the bottom of her stairs. âThanks for inviting me to use your beach access. I had no idea it was about to change my life. I thought Iâd never see Amanda again.â
She nodded, making him feel like he needed to explain.
âBefore Jack diedâ¦Iâd promised her that I wouldnât let anything ever happen to him. I was the best man at their wedding. Iâll never forgive myself for taking the new assignment that separated us. If Iâd been thereââ
âIt wouldnât have done diddly.â She pressed her finger against his chest.
