Chapter Sixteen
Malik
The crowd at the airport was as bad as expected. The lines moved slowly, the temperature was uncomfortably warm, and Malik fiddled with his phone. The memory of betrayal on Allyâs face the previous day stood out in stark contrast to his other thoughts. The conversation between Malik and Rahman was nonexistent as they shuffled forward in half-steps. The noise of the airport became a background drone as Ally remained in the forefront of his mind.
Absorbed by thoughts of her and how miserable she had looked the day before, Malik barely paid attention as the hefty man in front of him stepped back, bumping into him to allow someone to pass by. Rahman, however, was not distracted, and he immediately stepped forward and placed a hand at Malikâs back to steady him.
âThanks.â Malik barely made eye contact with Rahman, who said nothing in return.
Several minutes passed with Malik still considering dialing Allyâs number. The leaden heaviness in his gut told him he should. There should be something he could say to make that feeling go away, but he could not think what words could change any of it. He was already in line waiting to catch his flight home. He put the cellphone back into his pocket and huffed a long sigh as he saw how many people were still in front of him.
Time passed as slowly as the line moved. After what felt like an hour, he took out his phone again. Tapping his finger against the slim side of it, he calculated the ease with which he could turn it on and pull up her number. A quick call just to apologize again would perhaps set his gut at ease. Not that it would do much for his aching heart.
Without realizing it, he had fallen for the pretty, funny, intriguing caterer who wanted only to get an education and become a doctor. She wanted to help people. People had come from much better backgrounds and aspired to do far less. With no family, few friends, and little help, she had already achieved more than many people ever would in their entire lives. Her fire and determination coupled with an admirable work ethic made her a force to be reckoned with. Malik was certain that she could and would accomplish anything she put her mind to.
Again, he pocketed the cellphone. No words came to mind to open the conversation. It would be an awkward silence at best; at worst, she might scream at him. Then again, she might not even answer. He was not sure which outcome would be the best.
But she deserves better than the brief explanation he had given her yesterday. And that goodbye was the lamest thing in the world. She hadnât even asked him to take her back to her dorm.
Rolling his eyes, Malik looked up to the high, industrial ceiling, grasping for anything in his mind that might ease the distress in his chest and head. Finally, determined that he would call her, he once more took the phone from his pocket.
