SECONDARY SOURCES: BOOKS

552. Aboucaya, Claude. LES INTENDANTS DE LA MARINE SOUS L’ANCIEN REGIME. Gap: Imprimerie Jean, 1958.

This is an administrative history of these important marine officials. Aboucaya views Colbert, the creator of this office, as methodical and meticulous. He provides a highly technical account of the new centers of the marine, and much information on certain intendants like Colbert de Terron.

553. Adam, Antoine. HISTOIRE DE LA LITTERATURE FRANCAISE AU XVIIe SIECLE. 2 vols. Paris: Domat, 1948.

Adam’s book is an excellent study of seventeenth-century French literature. Although he notes the thirst for travel books and the exotic, Adam shows that the classical ideal could not seriously consider these works as anything other than a frill, a fripérie. Good individual studies, such as his work on La Fontaine, demonstrate the influence of China and America.

554. ——. LES LIBERTINS AU XVIIe SIECLE. Paris: Buchet-Chastel, 1964.

This work explains why seventeenth-century skeptics found little of value in descriptions of non-European societies. This is surprising since their intellectual mentor, Montaigne, made such effective use of Spanish histories of the New World in his ESSAIS.

555. Allier, Raoul S.P. LA CABALE DES DEVOTS, 1627–1666. Paris: Colin, 1902; reprint ed., Geneva: Slatkine reprint, 1970.

Allier provides a useful study of this influential, ultra-Catholic group. He was decidedly hostile to the dévots. It is only indirectly useful for colonial studies since neither Allier nor any of the other early students of the dévots understood their impact on evangelization and colonization. Allier assumes wrongly that the Guiana expedition of 1652 led by the Abbé Marivaux was destined for Canada. Nevertheless, there is useful information on figures like La Meilleraye, Ventadour, the Fouquets and the Duchesse d’Aiguillon.

556. Anthiaume, Albert. CARTES MARINES, CONSTRUCTIONS NAVALES, VOYAGES DE DECOUVERTE CHEZ LES NORMANDS, 1506–1650. 2 vols. Paris: Dumont, 1916.

This work includes a useful study of emigration to the Antilles in 1627. He shows that the method of recruitment was a semi-feudal arrangement by which people passed for free and shared profits with a seigneur. The state, or even the semi-official companies, had little direct impact on emigration in the early decades of the seventeenth century.

557. Auger, Roland J. LA GRANDE RECRUE DE 1653. Montreal: Publications de la société génealogique canadienne-française, 1955.

This recruitment for New France in 1653 was promoted by religious groups and private individuals—not the state. It shows that the great years of the emigration to Canada started in the early 1650s and lasted two decades. Colbert’s policies built upon a decade of activity. The 1653 recruitment for New France in conjunction with the large convoy for Cayenne in 1652 demonstrate that hard times and political turmoil in France tended to promote emigration.

558. Augier, F.R. et al. THE MAKING OF THE WEST INDIES. London: Longmans, 1960.

Similar to other general works in English on the West Indies in that it is very weak on the French islands.

559. Auguste, Alphonse. LES SOCIETES SECRETES CATHOLIQUES DU XVIIe SIECLE. Paris: Picard, 1913.

Studies the Company of the Holy Sacrament and other such ultra-Catholic groups, expecially at Evreux. Not seen.

560. Avenel, Georges d’.
