Chapter Twenty-Four

“True’s bringing the boat around,” Jhett said.

That explained exactly nothing to Lana. She stayed in the background, just listening for a few minutes.

Eventually Law remembered she was there and turned to her, pointing to the keypad by the front door. “If you need anything, hit the pound key on the intercom and Monty will be right up.”

That was all he said. Before she could respond, they walked around to the other side of the slate fireplace column and disappeared. Lana hurried around just as the hidden elevator to the roof door slid closed.

Stepping back from it, Lana turned off all of the lights and ran to the windowsill for an unobstructed view of dark doings in plain sight.

Sure enough, a few minutes later, Law exited the building, heading straight for the closest dock. Several minutes passed before a powerboat approached, its wake slicing a white vee through the dark water until the dark-clad man at the wheel cut the engines and steered in slowly.

Law waited, catching the line that was cast toward him, using it to pull the boat alongside the dock before looping the line around a piling. Jhett tossed several duffel bags to the man who’d thrown the line, who quickly stowed them in the back of the boat.

Lana figured the man was True, and confirmed it when he reached out a hand to help Jhett board, then hopped from the boat to the dock. Jhett got busy with the bags, unzipping them for a final check of gear Lana couldn’t see, while Law and True stood together no more than a foot apart, their heads bent in deep conversation.

The stormy weather was getting worse—she could tell by the whitecaps. She spotted another boat out on the rough water, zeroing in on the dock, barely slowing, shoved along by the force of the wind.

True and Law didn’t seem to hear it. The boat came in and tied up fast. They looked over their shoulders when a man jumped from it to the dock.

The man seemed agitated, gesturing wildly, growing angry by her guess. But his vibe told Lana he was more than angry. Afraid? Desperate? He seemed to be pleading with Law.

Was he begging for forgiveness or a favor?

Law placed his hand on the man’s shoulder as if reassuring him. True took over the conversation as Law turned away and made several calls. In between the calls he appeared to be texting. At one point, the unknown man took out his phone for Law to look at. He glanced at the screen and nodded. That was all. The meeting ended abruptly.

One after the other, both boats sped off into the night. Lana’s mind raced with scenarios. What the hell was going on? She couldn’t figure it out from what she’d seen.
