Chapter 4

Secrets of The Past

“Does it have anything to do with his murder?” Jessica whispers to her, sucking in her breath, chewing on her lip in hopes that she can keep the tears from her eyes.

She knows that she can’t keep the tears from her voice.

“No, I promise you that it has nothing to do with that. I would tell you something if I knew anything about it.” Cassandra defends herself.

Jessica takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly. At least she can be happy about that. The upside is that it wouldn’t implicate Cassandra in Brandon’s death.

“Then it can’t be that hard to tell me what happened.” Jessica points out to her, smiling at her.

Nothing could be worse than someone hiding information from her when it comes to Brandon and what led to his death.

“There was this one time that he had come over to ask for help. I didn’t think anything of it. He needed help with a test, and we did a quick study session,” Cassandra begins to explain to her.

“At the table or your bedroom?” Jessica raises her eyebrows.

“My bedroom. Well, we were talking and having a good time after. And we kissed. It was just a kiss. One kiss.” Cassandra tells her, trying to convince her that there was nothing wrong with it.

Jessica doesn’t know what to say to her about it. There’s nothing to say, it had happened, and now it simply was another fact to deal with in her confused state.

“Was this recently? Before anything happened to him?” Jessica asks her.

“Yes. It was a week before all this happened. I don’t know how it got so crazy. I don’t even know if he liked it.” Cassandra shakes her head.

“He had a girlfriend. Who cares if he liked it? He had a girlfriend that he wrote about in his journal.

About how happy he was. Why would he do something like that?” Jessica scowls at her.

“I don’t know, all I know is that he is the one who took that first step. Not me.” Cassandra points at her chest.

Jessica knows that it doesn’t matter now.

“Would you have kept it a secret if the guy didn’t call you out on it? Would you have kept it a secret if Brandon was still alive?” Jessica asks her.

“Yes. I can’t lie about that. We agreed not to tell anyone about it. We didn’t want to hurt anyone. We didn’t want anyone looking at us like we were the bad guys. It was one kiss. That’s it.” Cassandra reminds her.

“You should’ve pushed him away. You should’ve told him no; you saw it coming. Taken charge by moving away, by pushing him away,” Jessica mutters.

She’s not angry, and she’s just shocked that Cassandra would put all the blame on her brother. Her dead brother.

“Jessica, it doesn’t mean that you can’t trust me. It doesn’t mean that you have to push me away because of what someone says to you. Is that why you pushed Cory away?” Cassandra asks her.

“Cory doesn’t have the same ambition as I do.
