Chapter 6
Reality 1: Thoughts Define Health.
Consider the following statement: “Truth or Myth? If the mind is pure and thoughts are pure, you are freed from all diseases, primary and secondary”. Before you attempt to answer this question, you need to define what health is, and to explore the effect of thoughts on health.
Health, as defined here, makes reference to mental health, emotional health, and physical health. Mental health has been defined in various ways by different institutions, but one definition which captures the essence of what people go through as they progress through life was given by Galderisi (et al., 2015) as follows: “Mental health is a dynamic state of internal equilibrium which enables individuals to use their abilities in harmony with universal values of society.”
While this definition might sound like a mouthful, note that it doesn't make reference to just positive thoughts but ticks all checkboxes as follows: The definition acknowledges that as you go through life, you will face different and challenging scenarios like going to a new school, adolescent crisis, marriage, parenthood, losing loved ones, etc. However, as life unfolds and you go through all this, you are expected to actively search for mental equilibrium and then adjust accordingly. Through it all, you may have to deal with various emotions depending on what you are going through, for example, fear, grief, sadness, anger and so forth. As can be seen from this, change is part of life, and every person needs to be mentally flexible and equipped to deal with changes and adverse life events. The definition of mental health also makes reference to societal norms, as this is the standard that is used when evaluating mental health. For example, the ability to respect and care for oneself and others as per societal expectations, respect for one's own and others' freedoms, respect for the environment, and so on are part of societal norms that we are all expected to abide by (Galderisi et al, 2015). If we’re unable to follow these norms, then our mental well being may be at risk.
According to familydoc.org, emotional health refers to the ability to control one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors when faced with life’s challenges as shown through keeping problems in perspective and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. While mental health and emotional health can sometimes be used interchangeably, they are different. It is possible to find someone of sound mind who is emotionally unstable and vice versa. Again, being emotionally healthy does not mean you are happy all the time, but implies that you are aware of your emotions and can deal with them, whether they are positive or negative. Lastly, physical health is the condition of your body, taking into consideration everything from the absence of disease to fitness level (EUPATI,2015).
When it comes to the effect of thoughts on health the three kinds, mental, emotional, and physical health, are heavily intertwined. If the mind is healthy, a person is most likely to be emotionally and physically healthy.
