Critical Self-Talk and Guilt Are Not the Same

Guilt and shame are often perceived to be associated with each other. However, the literature, as we shall explore later, supports the differentiation of shame and guilt as separate experiences that are not coterminous. Self-talk has its roots in and is directly associated with shame and cyclical shame-based behavior. Guilt, on the other hand, is associated with conscience and conscious thought. Guilt is about an infraction of our values, while shame is about our self.

As asserted in the model presented in this book, the etiology of critical self-talk is the result of early-life abuse and trauma. Negative self-talk expresses shame toward the self. To the contrary, guilt is often experienced as anxiety about infracting a learned value; it is not about the self at all. Guilt is about something we did; shame is always about us, about who and how we are.

In positing that there is a definite distinction between critical self-talk and a conscience (guilt), Firestone et al. (2002) state the following:
