Affirmation was actually designed as a protection mechanism. But how many of us actually use that mechanism? Benefits of affirmation are strongest when thinking about the future and what is possible. It is less beneficial when thinking about the past. Affirmation requires long-term application to be beneficial.17 Oxford University found neural pathways are increased when people practice self-affirmation tasks.18 Specifically, the increase is in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex; this is where decisions are made. This means that having a low volume of self-affirmation lowers decision-making ability! Which we might expect to bring about more negative thinking about oneself, thus causing a snowball effect.
However, when we do practice self-affirmation the prefrontal cortex becomes more active! This decreases health deteriorating stress.
Biblical Affirmation
Affirmation, as we have demonstrated, is an important tool to renew our own minds. The Bible also directs us to use affirmation in ministry to others.
Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up (Romans 15:2).
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
The question is, how do we exercise affirmation in a biblical way? The key here is to see people the way God sees them and say what He says about them! To see yourself as God sees you and say what He says about you! Speak kingdom identity over yourself and others:
1.We are friends of God.
2.We are chosen by God.
3.We are appointed by God.
4.We are bearing fruit for God (see John 15:15-17).
5.We are Godâs handiwork.
6.We are created to do good worksâwhich He prepared in advance for us to do (see Eph. 2:10)!
7.We have the mind of Christ (see 1 Cor. 2:14-16).
