The other benefit of conducting your own assessment is that it promotes to others just how seriously you take the security of your home and the safety of your loved ones. The more you are able to promote to a bad guy that they will have a better chance of being successful if they target someone else, the better off you will be. A lion stalking a gazelle in the wild doesn’t attack the strongest of the herd. They prefer to attack the gazelle who has gotten lost and looks weak. Bad guys are no different. If one bank or one house looks easier than another—and the loot reward is believed to be the same—the target that is easier to hit will get chosen. The fact that the other one may be a closer drive to their home will rarely if ever factor into the equation.
