One of the older conscripts, the so-called borodachi (bearded ones), called up during 1915. The mobilisation orders of that year caused widespread unrest as they deprived families of their breadwinners. There were frequent instances of fighting with the police and in the more remote areas gangs of conscription dodgers hid out in the forests living like bandits.

In September 1915 Ivanov had recorded that ‘the number of soldiers travelling without documents on the railways is increasing’. The Tsar responded by increasing the level of surveillance of roads and railway stations to reduce desertion.
