After everyone’s prayer had been said, the meal began with the passing of bowls and dishes. Monroe took over the conversation almost immediately. Herschel, feeling quite anxious since Monroe had showed up, quickly realized that he’d lost his appetite. He could see by the sappy look Monroe gave Belinda that the overly talkative man most definitely had a keen interest in her.

So now that I’m aware of my competition, I need to figure out what to do about it. Herschel picked up his fork, stabbed one of the cabbage rolls, and put it on his plate. Would it be best to back off, or should I keep pursuing Belinda and hope that I’m the one she chooses? Of course, he reasoned, she may not be interested in either me or Monroe. The invitation I received to join Belinda and her family at this table may only have been made because she’s such a nice woman or felt like she owed me the favor because I treated her to supper at a restaurant.

As the meal came to a close and dessert was served, Monroe became even more obnoxious. Herschel couldn’t believe what a braggart the man was, especially when it came to his furniture business.

“Of course,” Monroe said with a smug expression, “I’ve always had a good business head. Fact of the matter—my goal is to own several businesses, which will secure a strong financial future for me and the woman I will marry someday.” He looked at Belinda and gave her another sappy grin.

Herschel nearly choked on his piece of shoofly pie. There was no doubt in his mind. Monroe had his sights set on marrying Belinda.

His jaw clenched. And I guess there isn’t much I can do about it. The question is: Does she feel the same way about him?
