Track Three

The first concert was in Athens, outside, with a view of the sparkling sapphire sea. Lana wore sunglasses and a pair of shirts, both sleeveless of course, and strummed her guitar as she stepped up to the microphone. "Kalispera, Athens!" she said, having learned a few key Greek phrases for the occasion. "I'm going to speak more English than Greek, and I'm sure you'll appreciate it given my surely atrocious accent. How is everyone doing?"

The crowd replied with a cheer, and Lana cheered back.

"I apologize in advance for sweating, but we're not used to... the sun. Seattle has a different sun than Greece. It's nowhere near this effective. But we have you all to thank for our record label deciding to send us here, so we're gonna treat you really special. We're going to play some old songs." She strummed the intro to "Radio," which prompted cheers. "We're going to play some new songs." More cheers and applause. "Karen is going to juggle chainsaws. Codie will swallow fire while Nessa spins plates on poles. And if this heat keeps up, I may strip for completely practical purposes. So let's get right to it, what do you say?"

They started with the instrumental "Mutually Assured," to which they had added enough embellishments so to make it last nearly ten minutes. When it came to a crashing end, the music was replaced with cheers and applause. An entire section of the audience had their thumbs hooked over their hearts, flapping their fingers like bird wings. When Karen switched between the violin and cello, she returned the gesture to the delight of the audience.

Lana turned her back to the audience and mouthed a countdown to the band, then started "The Importance of Your Radio."

They played most of the first album, and snippets from the second. After an hour of playing, Lana said, "You all have been so lovely to us, how about a couple of songs from the new album? What do you think about that?"

They replied with cheers and whooping, and Lana smiled.

The first song was "The Next Ferry," which led into the Nessa-led "Neither Nor." Karen took center stage for an instrumental called "Improve the Silence."

"Those are all from, ah, The Middle Distance, due out early next year. And now, because you have been such a wonderful group of people, we have a special guest for you. She was going to stay in Rome, but we begged and pleaded with her to come with us. 'The Greek people need you,' we said. 'Please, please, don't let them down.' So she finally caved, and now she's here to perform some songs. Because even on vacation, musicians have to work for their supper. Please welcome the lovely... Dash Warren."

She came out in knee-high boots and a lace skirt, the guitar swinging under her arm like a purse as she hugged Lana and took the microphone. "Hello, Athens!"

They performed "Band of Girls" and "Man of Many Wiles," then Lana asked for silence. The crowd very slowly quieted down.
