Chapter 19
"SO, TALK TO ME, IAN, how are we looking in terms of filling the T.O. and how is the training going?" I am at our offices in Ori-Games. I just got in and I'm sore, Jose really did a number on me this morning, I told him we had to be here early, but I told him this morning, because I knew if I told him last night, he would simply wake me up half an hour earlier. His answer was simple and elegant, he went with the most intensive half an hour of exercise I have experienced in my life. I thought I was going to pass out, I swear. Anyway, showered, fed, and relatively coherent, I made it in with five minutes to spare before the teleconference.
"We will have all positions filled by the end of the month, easy. We have perfect candidates, and we are only waiting on the medical tests. Everything else is done."
Iâm looking at some of his memos. Succinct, to the point, Ianâs style of writing is distinct, they all are, to me.
We do lose people at the medical testing level. Oh, we don't discard them, we still offer them jobs, we have an almost inexhaustible supply of those, for now, we simply give them jobs Earthside. We are staffing our Space Table of Organization, which is our priority.
"JJ, talk to us, how are we looking with the ship?"
"Excellent. We have excavated about forty percent of the volume we need. Also, since we are all here," it was a figure of speech, of course, he was up in STS with Vicky, I was at Ori-Games, and the rest of us were scattered all over the world. "There is a couple of subjects we must address. First, we had an incident yesterday at CAS. The foreman on duty has lived in Chiclayo all his life. He was ecstatic when he got to work for us in the Anchor Station. His cousin is the Chief of Police. Some EIO sympathizers rushed the doors of the cargo area and tried to break into the warehousing section." That was bad. That area, like the one in KAS, is an inbound storage section. All material is stored in-house until examined and approved by customs officials. We are in charge of everything up to and including security, but we report to the Peruvian government, just like, in KAS, we report the US Customs. "He was working late and was on-premises by chance. He mobilized our security and called his cousin, the police got there in time to cooperate with us preventing what could have been a very serious breach."
"Where were our security people?" Aaron is leaning into his computer pick up and it distorts his face, but I could tell he is worried. Kowalski is out of the room, but we record all our meetings, heâd get all this later. Heâs going to be pissed.
"They were on duty and on station. Apparently, the EIOs used the oldest trick in the book to soften them up.
