I walk into KMEX and ask the receptionist for Roland Zanzibar. He is the news director at the Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicano station. Soon he appears to greet me and we go into his office.
âIâd like to go over the crucial points of the hearing,â he says.
He appears relaxed and after a brief conversation I feel that I have his confidence. The talk is warm and friendly and he seems genuinely interested in the subject. It is not simply another day of work for him. He gauges my own sympathies. He knows that the event has great meaning for me. And, from newspaper articles, I know he is regarded as a veteran journalist by his own peers. He has recently returned from Vietnam and has a weekly column in the largest newspaper west of Chicago, the Los Angeles Times. Stonewall comes off like an angry baboon in comparison.
We go into another room where he introduces me to his staff. From here, we go behind a stage into a sound-proofed room and meet the man with the camera.
âLadies and gentlemen, we are in the studios of Station KMEX and we have Mr. Buffalo Z. Brown for this afternoonâs program.⦠Good afternoon, Se ⦠or Brown. ¿Cómo está usted?â
For an instant I freeze up. It is the first time Iâve been interviewed in Spanish. I look into the loose smiling face of Roland Zanzibar, who wants to know how I am.
