Chapter Fourteen

As the primus had stated, there was only one tent on that side of the yard and it was much larger than any of the other outbuildings around the base. When they landed in front of it, however, it was hard to tell whether Dr. Welby was even there at all.

“He said we were expected, right?” Raven whispered.

Leander lowered his head toward the side of the tent and tried to investigate without looking too interested. “That doesn’t mean we’ll wait all day.”

“Then I won’t keep you any longer.” The male voice came from inside the tent seconds before the entrance flap was whipped aside and the man marched out.

The vet was at least six-three and broad-shouldered, with onyx-colored hair that made his dark-brown eyes look even darker. He wore leather riding breeches and boots beneath a loose white tunic, his leather jacket open and slightly off-color from the rest of his ensemble.

That outfit’s not exactly military-issue. So is he part of the Legion or not?

“Are you the vet?” Raven blurted and studied him curiously as he headed to a stack of supply crates outside the tent.

“Dr. Chui Welby.” He looked expressionlessly at her and nodded once before he regarded Leander with the same apathetic expression. “I assume you’re my escort today.”

Before she could confirm anything, Dr. Welby uttered a piercing whistle, stalked toward the table beside the supply crates, and snatched up a leather satchel bulging with his tools and supplies before he slung it over his head and shoulder.

The dragon who responded to his call was so swift and so silent that neither the mage nor her familiar saw her coming until she swooped low over the top of the vet’s tent. The canvas walls fluttered madly before the massive black female landed beside the supply crates outside.

If she wasn’t already Leander’s size, she was incredibly close. The red dragon uttered a low growl at her approach, and she fixed him with piercing emerald-green eyes as she lowered her belly to the grass for her rider to fit her saddle and harness.

A cautious fury burned through Raven without warning and she knew it was coming from Leander.

Take it easy, huh? She patted the base of his neck while Dr. Welby finished securing the saddle straps and stepped into the stirrups. She’s big but she hasn’t done anything to make you so angry.

Not yet, he replied in her mind, lowered his head, and stared at the black dragon with another menacing growl.

Only then did Dr. Welby seem to notice the strange interaction between his perfectly calm and unassuming black female and the legionary’s massive red male. He took the harness in both gloved hands and smirked at the back of his mount’s head. “There’s only so much time in a day, Gruene. Let’s go.”

The black dragon took two steps toward Leander, rumbled her private amusement, and parted her scaley black lips slightly to blow a thin, curling tendril of dragon frost at the red male’s face.

Leander’s muscles stiffened beneath her as he froze, and before either of them could process what had happened, Gruene and Dr.
