49. Florentine, Blessing Christ in a Mandorla Supported by Angels and Cherubs. Woodcut. 1491.

This woodcut of 1491 is from the book entitled Monte Santo di Dio, published in Florence. The broad, undulating lines characteristic of the woodcut are seen everywhere. Also typical of the medium is the strong, clear alternation of the dark of the inked areas and the white of the paper. This handsome sheet is one of the earliest Florentine woodcuts used to illustrate a book.

50. Venetian, Polifilo and Polia from Francesco Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, Venice. Woodcut. 1499.

This page from the splendid Hypnerotomachia Poliphili shows the fine integration between print and illustration found in the first books illustrated with woodcuts. Even though it depicts a considerable amount of space, the woodcut, because of its linear nature, does not disturb the inherent flatness of the type and white paper on which it is printed. Both text and image are equally clear and equally easy to read.
