"Amarli, there a fire I need to know about?" Tanner asks in his low drawl, as I round the corner smacking into the back of him. He is standing looking over a group of people training.

"Sorry Tanner. No, I was just keen to get working," I answer quickly, eager for him to get me involved in something, anything, so I don't have to focus on what just happened with Dorian.

He turns more so that he can look over me. He stops at my feet, my bare feet, quirking his eyebrow up in question.

"I was hoping that someone might have picked up my shoes from earlier, if not I will be back in five," I say softly.

He nods his head as he starts walking in the opposite direction of the training field indicating that I have to follow him. He stays ahead of me and is silent in his speech, the slight tilt of his head and the buzz around him indicating he is communicating with someone in the pack. I wasn't privy to it, I don't want to be.

Being in a pack, there are a couple of ways that you can join. I was born into the McDermott Pack, so pretty much as soon as I could communicate I was a part of the pack bond, so was included in the pack talk. When I left, the Alpha effectively cut those bonds to the entire pack, including my family. The metaphysical connection between me and my wolf is always my own circuit, but cutting a shifter from a pack means you can no longer feel the other members of the pack, don't share emotions with them, can't 'talk' through our connection. It is more like having another person in your head, like when you talk to yourself or read. The words are there but in an active bond connection, people can direct link to you. Handy but intrusive.

All shifters learn control, it's part of sharing your body with another living entity, but another life lesson is how to shield yourself, to shut yourself away without severing your connection to the rest of the pack through the bond. It's like building a wall around yourself, building a moat, growing a thick hedge, however you need to visualise it. It acts the same way. Allowing you privacy from the constant hive of activity in a pack.

The other way to be inducted into a bond, which loners like me do, is for the Alpha to plug you in, like an extension cord to a bond. In time as the pack accepts you and you assimilate yourself to the pack, that cord melds itself by supernatural magic and it emerges more like a spider's web and is more natural, stronger.

Shifters survive all the time being removed from one pack, joining with another. In our ancient tomes recording history, immemorial stories from our ancestors of alliances, magic, prophecies used to detail mate bonds that glittered like gold ribbon, binding mates together in a separate network, but that hasn't happened for eons.
