The Fourth

It was the Fourth of July and we were holed up in a dusty old RV park in Van Horn, Texas, just off Interstate 10, for a two-day rest stop.

My grandfather, Papa, happened to be hauling freight in his big-rig semitruck along the same route and stopped by for a quick visit. His big bear hug and endearing nibble of my ear made me feel five years old again. A nibble of my ear was his affection toward me for as long as I can remember, and it was also my offering each and every time I saw him. He drank a Coke, had a smoke, wished us all well, and took off down the road again, pulling gears.

Outside of town there was a small pop-up fireworks stand stocked with the good stuff—Black Cats, cherry bombs, Roman candles, screaming meemies, hoosker doos, hoosker don’ts, whisker biscuits, scooter sticks, and whistlin’ kitty chasers. I didn’t see a single snake or sparkler. We loaded up!

That night, on an old dirt road in the middle of nowhere, we lit the sky on fire with a symphony of gunpowder. A few locals lit theirs as well and made it a night to remember.
