Chapter Nineteen

Seagulls squawked as Jasper surveyed the cliff’s edge. Two days earlier, his wife had disappeared. He had not—nor would he—give up his search for her. With no leads to say where she had gone, he had returned to the spot where the carriage had wrecked, hiring a local man by the name of Mark Andrews to scale the cliff wall and check the rocks below.

She would not be there, of course, but he had to be sure. If there was any possibility that she, in her disoriented state, had walked away from the wreck, returned, and tumbled over the cliff, he had to know.

“There’s nothing there, my lord,” the young blond man of twenty said as he hefted himself onto the rocks in front of Jasper. “I looked in every crevice and found nothing. Not a limb or a strand of hair. And the tide’s out, so if anything’d been left, I’d’ve found it. Meanin’ no disrespect, my lord”

Jasper waved a dismissive hand and released a sigh of relief. Now he knew for a fact she was not dead. At least not from a fall after the accident. The thought of her death made his blood run cold. But knowing she had run away made it boil.

“Very good,” Jasper replied, placing several coins into the young man’s hand. “Remember, if you hear anything, go to the Aldwick Hotel. Either ask for me directly or leave a message with the clerk.”

Andrews pulled on the coat he had thrown aside before making his descent. “Yes, my lord. The Aldwick Hotel. I’ll keep a lookout.”

Jasper had shared very little about the circumstances of Lydia’s disappearance, beyond the fact his wife was missing. And he had omitted his suspicions that she had willingly left him. Instead, he had given her description to everyone involved, telling them that he had learned from a passing merchant that she was spotted walking along the road, unsure of her name or where she was going.

His fabrication of what could have happened was not all fantasy. She truly could have amnesia and have no idea who or where she was. Or so said a tiny part of his brain. The other parts were certain she had made some sort of escape. It certainly explained that nagging feeling that something had not been right since their departure from Cherrywood Manor.

After Andrews took his leave, Jasper stood to stare out over the sea. If Lydia managed to elude him, he would never receive his inheritance.

Even as that thought irked him, he could not help but wonder why she chose to leave him at all. He had gone out of his way to make her happy, had gone above and beyond anything he had ever done for any other woman. And back then all he wanted was an afternoon beneath the covers.

And strangely enough, he had enjoyed her company far more than any of those women with whom he had been successful.

Well, he would learn the truth once he found her.

If he found her.
