Benedict was running out of sacred spaces.

Every place he had previously considered a sanctuary was no longer available to him. His study had been his alone, but now, every time he entered, he was reminded of Prudence sitting behind his desk, her nose within his ledgers, her beautiful face lifting to meet his.

He hadn’t wanted her there, and yet there she had been, causing a more abrupt and chaotic change to his life than he ever would have guessed.

The one other place that had been his and his alone had been his fencing room, where he had come any time he had something to get off his mind, knowing that by moving his body he could shake out his thoughts.

Now, of course, he would never be able to enter this room again without thinking of Prudence and what they had done together in here.

He had been a complete ass to her afterward, he knew that, even though she had been everything any man could ever have asked for, more than he would ever have expected from any woman, let alone his wife.

She had been passionate, accepting, eager, and he had never enjoyed a woman the way he had enjoyed her.

And then he had been aware that he had made her feel like she hadn’t been enough. But he couldn’t afford to give her any space – for if he did, she might find her way into places where he didn’t want her, where he couldn’t have her.

For this was all going to end. He had to continue to remind himself of that. He had made a promise – to himself, and more importantly, to his father’s memory – that he was going to right all the wrongs that had been done to them.

It was all that he had worked for his entire life, and he couldn’t sway from his path now.

In the meantime, he would allow himself to enjoy his wife. He just had to make sure that it stayed physical between them, that there was no chance she would find her way into his affections.

For that would be utter disaster.
