RAMPAGE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

What is the definition of a rampage school shooting?

One of the main challenges in studying school shootings is the lack of a precise definition for the phenomenon (Elsass, Schildkraut & Stafford, 2016). Bondü and Scheithauer (2015) have highlighted that the term “school shooting” has received criticism for referring only to shooting incidents. This has led to the introduction of alternative terms, including “rampage” (Newman et al., 2004), “severe targeted violence in school” (Fein et al., 2002) or “school attacks” (Vossekuil et al., 2002). To classify an attack as a rampage school shooting, it needs to meet the following criteria:

1. The location of the incident is a “public stage” (i.e., in full view of other people), either on the school property or at a school-related function.

2. The shooters must be current or former students of the school where the shooting occurred.

3. There must be multiple victims (although the injuries do not have to be fatal) or, at the very least, multiple targets.

4. Some victims may be targeted specifically as a result of a grievance or perceived wrong, there are typically others who are chosen only for their symbolic significance (the principal who represents the school, the preps, the prayer circle, the jocks) or are shot at random (Newman & Fox, 2009).
