As the hour for the date with Madeleine approached, Enrique second-guessed his plans. This morning he’d been certain of the dinner arrangements he’d made, but doubts filled him. Should he have picked a fancier place with five-star ratings from foodies?

Sweat dampened the back of his neck. Enrique glanced at his watch. It was too late to change plans now. He hoped she enjoyed his original idea.

Dressed in a pair of tan pants, a short-sleeved button-down shirt, and boat shoes, he knocked on her bedroom door.

She opened it. “Hi.”

He found himself speechless. Madeleine was…beautiful. Her hair was pulled into a ponytail. She wore a cropped shirt, navy capris, and strappy sandals. He hadn’t seen her since they said goodbye to Reggie and his mother, but it had been worth the wait.

She squinted. “You’re not wearing a suit.”

“I said casual dress.”

“I know, but…” A charming pink colored her face. “I assumed you’d wear a suit, but you look good out of one. I mean, what you have on is great.”

Seeing the princess flustered was more fun than it should be.

“You’re lovely, as usual.” And shorter, since she wasn’t wearing heels, but he thought better of saying that. He bent his arm before extending it. “Shall we?”

Fifteen minutes later, the limousine parked in front of a small café. The window shades were drawn and a sign read closed, but a light shone through the glass door.

Madeleine peered through the limousine’s side window. “This is a charming restaurant, but I believe they only serve breakfast and lunch.”

“Tonight they will serve dinner.” Karl had suggested the café to Enrique as a place they could eat in private.

His bodyguard sprang from the car and walked into the café despite what the sign said. Less than a minute later, he returned to the limo and opened the rear door. “They are ready for you, Your Highnesses.”

Two minutes later, Madeleine entered first.

Enrique followed her.

The awed expression on her face was all he needed to see. “It’s so lovely.”

Lit candles sat on flat surfaces around the café. The flickering flames provided a warm glow. It would be the perfect romantic atmosphere for a couple about to embark on their forever. Enrique hoped it wasn’t too much.

A white linen cloth covered a round table with two chairs. Votives sat on either side of a clear jar filled with freshly cut daisies.

She glanced around. “There’s only one table set.”

“We’re the only customers dining here tonight.”

Her lips parted. “You went to so much trouble.”

“No trouble. I only had to make a phone call to the owner for the dinner to come together.”

She touched her throat before motioning to the table. “There are daisies.”

Her surprise warmed his heart. “Did you think I’d forget?”

“No,” she admitted. “But I wasn’t expecting all this. Any of it, really. Thank you.”

He pulled out a chair for her. “Please sit.”

She did, and he moved to his seat.

“I had no idea you could reserve the entire café.” Madeleine glanced around. “How did you know that?”

“It was Karl’s suggestion. Your brother thought they might be open to a private dinner, so I called and asked.
