The Worst Possible Turn

Two points not yet mentioned from Dürrenmatt’s list of 21 are the following:

  3.  A story has been thought to its conclusion when it has taken its worst possible turn.

  4.  The worst possible turn is not foreseeable. It occurs by accident.

The accident in this case is that Möbius has unwittingly put himself under the care of a psychiatrist who is also an insane megalomaniac. Fräulein Doktor Mathilde von Zahnd crashes the physicists’ party to announce that she copied Möbius’s manuscripts before they were burned and created a global cartel to fully exploit the materialistic potential of his Principle of Universal Discovery. And all this with the help of King Solomon, it turns out:

MÖBIUS: Do be reasonable. Don’t you see you’re mad?

FRÄULEIN DOKTOR: I’m no more mad than you. (90)
