I asked one group of German students to summarize a particular point by writing one new stanza for Amazing Grace. They wrote eight stanzas and performed them with instruments secured from their dorm rooms. Their enthusiastic response destroyed my lesson plan but created a tsunami of motivation we rode through the remainder of the course. One group of Mexican pastors working on a mural summary of the Old Testament would not quit working to demonstrate their efforts. I asked politely, âAre you about finished?â They responded, âWeâll tell you when weâre finished!â
Managing time on a lesson plan requires real thinking, but managing time during a lesson is an art learned only through the crucible of experience. There is no way to learn time management without doing it. Start slow, start small, but start! Doing little, purposeful activities at first will help you get an idea about time. If you have never done anything like this, sprinkle a variety of activities over the semester or quarter, then adjust, add to, or delete until you achieve a blend of teacher presentation and student processing of information.
Equipment/Supplies
There is nothing mystical about this section. In essence, this is a note to self and reflects the supplies or equipment needed for the lesson. Like Santa Claus, make your list and check it twice. Having a great activity planned but no supplies on hand makes you look really pitiful. Computer, projector, cords, remote, masking tape, markers, paper clips, staples, board cleaner, sticky notes, three-by-five cards, or whatever you need, obtain it. Donât take anything for granted. I was once assigned a room with my requested overhead projector only to discover there was no screen or extension cord. Nice!
Evaluate
At the end of every lesson, write down the things that worked and the things that need improving. As some activity unfolds, I see more clearly how to make it work more smoothly. Sometimes I discard an activity even though students loved it because it failed to reinforce the learning. Scrapping something that students loved is quite painful. This is where I remind myself that I am an educator, not an entertainer.
The lesson plan that follows represents an actual lesson plan for graduate students. It is one of a cluster of lessons about Jesus as a teacher. Almost everyone admits Jesus was a great teacher. Many study Jesusâ teaching, but few analyze his behavior as teacher. Remember, he is no mere mortal; nothing escapes his attention. This lesson is designed to help students think about his role as a teacher and was the foundation for this chapter.
