“Mrs. Oshun, would you like more cappuccino?” Greta asked, indicating Candy’s empty cup.

“Yes, please.” Candy held the cup up for a refill. “Greta, where did you learn to make these delicious cappuccinos? I’ve paid up to seven dollars for a good one, and this is by far better than any of them.”

“Italia,” Greta said, with her thick accent. “My grandmother always make it the best.” She went back to cutting up the bits for another dish she made exceptionally well, Cobb salad.

Candy, wrapped in a silk kimono robe with nothing underneath, rested her slender yet curvy body on the stool at the kitchen island. She thumbed through the TV channels before reading a magazine on Kindle. It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon, and with Xavier gone and the house fairly quiet, Candy happily took the time to indulge in total relaxation.

She ordered a few new paintings for the living room. She was unofficially charged with changing them every other month, and she liked to focus on a new theme. Last month was Emergence, focusing on all things coming out of their shells or out of the dark. She then checked on her rental properties, sent her family a monthly check, deposited funds into the account that she opened for her sister’s school fees, and paid a few other personal bills.

She picked up her cell phone to dial her sister. When she answered, Candy said, “Lettie, my love. I miss you.”

Lettie’s voice was soft and quiet. “You won’t believe what happened this time.”
