“REE!”

Nico looked over as a tall, undeniably handsome man strode towards them with a warm smile.

“It’s so good to see you again!”

The man - Sam, it must have been - moved to embrace her, but Maria seemed to flinch at this assumed familiarity, and turned away, shaking his hand instead.

“Hi, Sam. This is Nico - uh...Prince -”

“Nico is fine,” he said, lifting one hand out of his crutches long enough to shake Sam’s hand. His grip was weak, their hands barely touching. Nico wondered if the man was nervous and tried to put him at his ease. “So what do you think of Esselania so far? Maria said you’re here on vacation?”

“A working vacation,” Sam said, with a knowing smile. “We can’t all ditch our responsibilities and go off on a trip whenever we want to.” He laughed, but the sound grated on Nico’s nerves.

“Well, it’s certainly a happy coincidence that your being here should coincide with Maria’s. She tells me you grew up together, Sam. Do you make it back to the island often?”

The grating laugh came again, and Nico’s grip tightened on his crutches.

“Why on earth would I go back there? No, once I broke free I was staying free.” He leaned over and nudged Maria in the side. “Only wish I could have persuaded this one to stay with me. I guess some of us are destined to stay at home.”

“My parents were sick,” Maria said, her voice taut. “I didn’t have a lot of choice in the matter.”

“Right, right.” Sam’s smile fell, but only for a moment. “Well, it looks like the opportunity to travel found you anyway. And as a personal assistant to the Prince of Esselania! Pretty exciting.”

“Ms. Fortuna has been spending most of her time helping me get back on my feet,” Nico said, with a grateful glance at Maria. “I’m sure she wouldn’t exactly call it exciting.”

“Yes - er - Your Highness. Are you recovered from your injuries?”

“Getting there. Well enough to manage a day of sightseeing with friends.” He put a heavy emphasis on the word friends, but Sam seemed to utterly miss the point. Swallowing a sigh, Nico tried again. “Where would you like to begin? There’s a cathedral, it’s the oldest in the country, or the national park is quite charming...”

“I was quite hoping to see inside the palace,” Sam began, sensing his error from the look Maria shot him. “But why don’t we start in the national park? It’s such a lovely day it’s a shame to waste this weather.” He slung an arm around Maria’s shoulder, and Nico resisted the urge to trip him with his crutches. “So, Ree, tell me everything. How’s home?”

Maria’s answers were quiet, her voice guarded, but Nico strained to hear them.

“Frances misses you. She doesn’t say it but she does. You need to call her more.” She paused. “Or you could visit.”

Sam glanced over at Nico, his answer filled with bravado evidently intended for the prince’s ears.

“Are you sure it’s my Mom
