They all laughed and then Prince Igor turned round and held up his hand to ask for silence.

It was amazing that the crowd obeyed him at once and for a moment there was not a sound to be heard except for a dog barking some distance away.

“My people,” Prince Igor began. “I have the great privilege and honour to present to you the most beautiful and most wonderful Princess in the whole of the Balkans, who with the kindness and graciousness of a warm heart has said that she will become my wife.”

He made a gesture with his hand before continuing,

“That she will join with me in making this country of great influence and security, which will ensure that we will no longer be afraid of the future as we have been in the past.”

The people were listening to him with an almost super-human silence.

As they then cheered, he took Lavinia’s hands and said,

“Allow me to present to you all Princess Lavinia of Tamrush.”

There was no chance of him saying more as a huge roar went up from the crowd.

In a strong voice that she hoped would carry to the far end of the crowd, Lavinia began,

“Thank you, thank you for this welcome and will you all please pray that I am bringing peace and happiness to this marvellous City and your beautiful country.”

As she finished, she bowed to the people and then turning round she curtseyed to Prince Igor.

Once again he kissed her hand.

Then, as it was impossible to speak for the noise of the cheering, he drew Lavinia to the other side of the stage where his open carriage was waiting and then helped her into it.

Although it was difficult for the horses to move, they gradually left the Square.

The huge crowd was still cheering and waving their hands to which Lavinia and Prince Igor responded.

It took them some little time to reach the long road leading away from the Square and it was only when they were some distance from the Square that they could speak to each other.

“You came at exactly the right moment, as I hoped you would,” Prince Igor said. “It was so like your father to time it so that the populace did not get bored with waiting for you.”

“Papa did not tell me you were planning
