Five Steps of Social Problem Solving

The problem-solving model we recommend is adapted from the foundational work of D’Zurilla and Goldfried (1971) and from the later work of Chang, D’Zurilla, and Sanna (2004). Where your clients are concerned, there are two main goals of problem solving:

Helping them improve their decision-making skills

Helping them respond with better reactions to the inevitable hassles of life

As usual, we recommend that you pull back from giving advice and directly telling your clients what to do. Instead, listen carefully, and be patient, first as you help them through the initial phase, when they describe their problems in concrete terms, and then as they generate a menu of potential solutions, explore possible alternative behaviors, and make decisions about which option to implement. Each step of the problem-solving model is shown in figure 9.1.
