Heads-Up

An exponent to the first power (x1) is just the base shown. An exponent to the zero power (x0) equals 1.

Some rules to remember with exponents:• When you multiply like variables, you get an exponent: y × y = y2.

• When multiplying two like variables with exponents, keep the variable the same and add the exponents: x2 + x4 = x6.

• When you apply an exponent to terms in parentheses that have powers, you multiply exponents to simplify the expression: (x3)3 = x3x3 = x9.

• When you multiply separate powers, you multiply the coefficients and then add the exponents: x2 × x2 × x2 = x9.

• When you multiply unlike variables with exponents, combine them into one term: x2 × y2 = x2 y2.
