If M. Shakhanov has not attracted Yeltsin in the struggle to establish the truth about the events of December 1986 inAlmaty, who openly stood Gorbachev’spolicy, outcome of the struggle would have taken a different turn. The commission, established after M. Shakhanov’s speech at Congress of People’s Deputies of the Soviet Union I, headed by QadirMyrzaliev, included some of the perpetrators of the bloodshed, would started to perform a secret mission, according to which: “There are would be groups of hooligans, alcoholics and drug addicts, organized by Kunayev at the square instead of democrats”. Only because of the fact that Yeltsin interfered in the matter, Gorbachev had to include in this commission eight of People’s Deputies, elected from Kazakhstan, and approve Shakhanov as a co-chair. Therefore, revealing the truth about the December uprising, in some respects, owe Yeltsin.
