Mr Evans glared at Barbara, his eyes small grey pebbles behind his spectacles. Grandpa shook his head.
âGood God, man â you canât hand over your children as if they were parcels. You have responsibilities. Youâre their father. Theyâve lost one parent; do you expect them to lose another?â
Mr Evans ignored him, keeping her pinned under his stare. âIf you donât want to take them, I shall have them fostered out. Iâm going to sell this place and move away.â
âOf course Iâll take them. I love them. Theyâre my brothers. I always thought it was her that was cruel and heartless but you are far worse.â She looked at Grandpa for support. âYouâll have to act as their guardian until I come of age. Will you do that for me? I shall understand if you donât want to. After all theyâre not your blood relations.â
âI shall be delighted to have them as part of the family. The Grove full of children after so many empty years? What a wonderful thought. But it will have to be done legally, Evans. Do you have a solicitor we can contact today?â
âI do. Iâll ring him immediately; tell him to draw up the papers.â He stood. âI want all their things removed from here forthwith. I intend to put the house on the market today.â
She nodded. âIn that case I suggest you move out, go to stay in the town, then I can remain here and organise things.â
Grandpa nodded. âPerhaps you could get Mrs Peterson and Mrs Thorogood to come over and help you? The cabâs still waiting outside. Iâll go down to town with Evans and start things moving on the legal front. If you tell me what you need, Iâll buy you something to wear.â
âIâll write it down, then you can hand the list to the girl and sheâll sort it out.â
He smiled. âWise move; bit embarrassing a chap my age having to ask for young ladiesâ clothing.â
Mr Evans made his telephone call then went upstairs to pack. She didnât want to be anywhere near him so remained in the kitchen.
âIâm going to tell everyone the truth, Grandpa. They need to know why Tom and David are never coming back here.â
âI think it will make it easier for you if you do. Having it out in the open after all these years is a healthy move. You donât have anything to be ashamed of. The fault was never yours.â
âI think Iâm beginning to understand that events were always beyond my control. I think that was Mr Evans leaving. I hope heâs left the key.â She handed over the hastily scribbled list of her requirements.
âIâll ask him for you. Iâll do this shopping and speak to the legal bod then come back here.â
âYou donât have to; Grandmother will be expecting us both back tonight. I doubt if there are any trains tomorrow. If you donât go today you might not be available for your surgery first thing Monday morning.â
âMmmm⦠thatâs probably true, but Iâm not happy about leaving you alone here, not after everything thatâs happened.
