Issues to think about
1. Explain the distinction between contingent and essential properties. Next, select two objects that you can see at this moment. (Do not select artworks.) Distinguish between some of the essential and contingent properties of each object. Finally, identify perceptible and imperceptible relationships that each object has to other objects. Are any of these relationships essential to the identity of either of the objects you selected?
2. Explain the difference between ontological contextualism and constructivism. Which position do you regard as more plausible when assigning a meaning to Ogden Nashâs line, âCandy is dandy, but liquor is quicker?â Which is more plausible in assigning a meaning to Mary Richardsonâs action of attacking the Rokeby Venus with a meat cleaver?
3. Crazy Horse was a leader of the Oglala Lakota tribe who inspired his people to resist the encroachment of the United States into Indian Territory. A century later, Native Americans sued a corporation for naming a product âCrazy Horse Malt Liquor.â The Lakota people are also known as the Sioux, and many of them objected to the use of âThe Fighting Siouxâ as the nickname of a college athletics program. Many members of the dominant culture do not understand their objections and defended these appropriations. Do you think that the appropriations are acceptable? Why or why not?
4. American film director Kevin Smith was raised as a Roman Catholic. Dogma (1999), Smithâs fourth film, deals with the topic of organized religion. It gives serious offense to many Roman Catholics. Are the offensive elements of Dogma excusable on the grounds that SmiThis an âinsiderâ who criticizes his own culture? Would the film be more objectionable if the only difference was that it was written and directed by a Jewish or Hindu filmmaker?
