Figure 3.1. Example account entry in KeePassXC.
Now try using KeePassXC to log onto one of your accounts. I will stick with the ProtonMail example. Open up KeePassXC, and double-click on the URL of the account that you want to sign into, in this case ProtonMail. ProtonMail will then open in your browser, with boxes to type your username and password. Keep the Facebook entry selected in KeePassXC and click on the âcopy usernameâ icon (the sixth icon from the left, the one that looks like a person with an arrow). The username is then in the clipboard, and you can go back to the ProtonMail page and paste it into the box (Control V, or â V on MacOS). You will now be asked for your password. In KeePassXC, click on the key icon to the right of the username icon to copy your password to the clipboard. Now go back to the browser and press Control or â V in the password box to paste in your password. You can now happily forget your password, as you no longer need to even know what it is!
If all of this seems a bit too much work, then there is an easier way. KeePassXC has a browser plug-in for most browsers called KeePassXC-Browser, that will automatically fill out usernames and passwords for you so you donât have to do all that cutting and pasting. First you will need to enable browser integration in KeePassXC (Preferences > Browser Integration > Enable browser integration ). On this page you can select which browser you want to use, and links are provided to install the plug-in for your browser. Once installed in your browser, you will see a small KeePassXC icon in your browser toolbar. Click this, then click the button to configure the link with your KeePassXC application on the desktop. You will need to provide a name for the link, and then you are ready to go. Sticking with the ProtonMail example, if you now go to the Facebook website, you should see a box popping up from KeePassXC asking if itâs OK to share information about your ProtonMail account with the plug-in (and if you have multiple accounts, you can select which ones to share). Click Allow Selected. You should now see a green KeePassXC icon in the login box on ProtonMail. If you click this, your credentials will be automatically inserted. If you have more than one account, you will be allowed to select which one you want to use. The KeePassXC browser plug-in isnât perfect â for example with sites like Google where username and password are entered on separate screens, it often doesnât work properly. However, it does make things very convenient. My own preference is to stick with cut-and-pasting from the KeePassXC application, but you can make your own decision on this.
Once you have entered your accounts into KeePassXC, have become comfortable using it to log into your accounts and have made sure to back up your password file, you can start the process of improving the security of your accounts.
