and he gave a detailed set of predictions on various chemical and physical properties of all three elements.

It took six years before the first of these predicted elements, later called gallium, was isolated. With a few very minor exceptions, Mendeleev’s predictions were almost exactly correct. The accuracy of Mendeleev’s predictions can also be clearly seen in the case of the element he called eka-silicon, later called germanium, after it had been isolated by the German chemist Clemens Winkler. It would seem that Mendeleev’s only failure lies in the specific gravity of the tetrachloride of germanium (Figure 20).
