“Good morning Mrs. Carter! How are you?” Jaxson greeted.

Before she could answer, he noticed how pale she looked. Brenda did not look well.

“Honey, are you alright?” He asked as he set the tray down and went to her side.

“No, I feel nauseous and I threw up the little that was on my stomach. I feel awful babe,” she explained.

“All of that happened this morning?” He asked.

“Yes, about fifteen minutes before you came in here. The smell of the food made me start gagging and then when I brushed my teeth, I started dry heaving and now I feel nauseated and I have a terrible headache.” She explained.

Jaxson took everything she said in and thought about it for a moment. He started smiling.

“This is not funny. I do not feel like myself at all,” she told him.

“Do you think you are pregnant?” He wanted to know.

“That honestly did not cross my mind, but now that you mentioned it, that could explain this feeling.

“Can you eat anything?” He asked.

“Not right now. Let me give my body time to recuperate. I feel bad.” She explained.

“Ok. I will put your food in the microwave, then I am about to make a trip to the Walgreens on the corner. I will be right back,” he said as he kissed her on the forehead.

He was excited and he wanted to know if he was about to be a father.

Thirty minutes later, Jaxson returned. He helped Brenda to the bathroom and gave her a small plastic cup to urinate in. Once she filled it up, he handed her the pregnancy test so she could dip it in her urine. When that was completed, she set the test on the paper towel Jaxson had laid on the counter. Now they had to wait three minutes. One line, negative; two lines, positive. Neither of them said anything as they waited. Brenda was having mixed feelings. Of course, she wanted to have Jaxson’s baby, but was she ready right now? She thought of school and her new job. Her husband’s possible NBA contract also floated through her mind. She did not want to mess anything up for them, but at the same time she did not want him to feel that she did not want their child either.

“I am going to be a father!” He shouted.

Brenda could not believe her ears as she looked at the pregnancy test herself. The evidence was right in front of her, there were indeed two pink lines on the stick, indicating she was pregnant.

“I cannot believe this, we just got married,” she said.

“Are you not happy Brenda?” Jaxson asked, looking at her intently.

“Yes, of course I’m happy, but it happened so fast! We haven’t made love that many times”, she explained.

“That means these soldiers march!” He bragged as he did a two-step.

Jaxson was very happy and proud that he had his wife pregnant. Brenda burst out laughing at his comment. Then she thought about the drinks they consumed the night before and wondered if that was part of the reason she was so sick this morning.
