CHAPTER 15

NO GOING BACK

When Adam woke up, Kellum was still naked and sprawled across the bed. Adam slid out of the bed and stepped into the bathroom. He undressed and rolled his underclothes into a wad, which he would later stuff into the side pocket of his travel bag.

When he was finished shaving and showering, Kellum was still passed out on the bed. Adam dressed and walked into the living room to see whether the girls were awake yet, but they were not. He opened the door to the hallway and picked up the complimentary copy of the New York Times that had been left at the threshold. He read through it and did the crossword puzzle until the others started to awaken. He wanted desperately for Kellum to wake up, just to make certain he would act normally toward him, hoping that Kellum would not know, or at least not remember, what he had done. Adam scolded himself for having drunk so much and hoped that his drunken stupidity had not ruined the greatest friendship he had ever had.

All the girls had finished getting ready and ordered coffee and pastries from room service.

“Is my brother ever gonna get up?” Tilda finally asked, walking toward the bedroom where Kellum was still sleeping.

“Uh, Tilda, I wouldn’t go in there. He’s passed out buck naked on the bed.”

“Nothing I haven’t seen before,” Tilda said. “Hey, girls, come get a load of my brother.”

Su Su and Mary Tate scurried excitedly into the bedroom behind Tilda and jumped down on the bed beside Kellum, who did not even move.

“Wake up,” Su Su said.

“Come on, Kellum, you lazy thing,” Mary Tate added.

“Huh,” Kellum finally roused. “What the fuck?”

“OK, girls,” Tilda said, pulling the top sheet over her brother’s naked body. “You’ve had your peep show. Now let him get ready so we can go hit the town.” She turned back to Kellum. “Get outta bed, you sleepy head,” she said, messing his hair before she led her two friends out of the room and closed the door. A few minutes later, she opened the door again and yelled, “Kellum, if you’re not up and ready in fifteen minutes, I’m calling room service for ice buckets!”

This threat apparently did the trick, as Adam could hear Kellum moving from the bed as Tilda closed the door. It seemed like an eternity before Kellum finally emerged from the bedroom, clean and shaven, but with a hangover emblazoned across his eyes and face.

“Coffee, coffee, my kingdom for some coffee,” he murmured as he dragged himself across the room and poured a cup of coffee, then plopped down close to Adam on the sofa and put his arm around him.

“Hey, buddy. You were pretty messed up last night. How are you doing this morning?”

If Kellum knows what I did, he certainly isn’t showing it, Adam thought. For a moment, he hoped that Kellum did know and that he had enjoyed it. Deep inside, though, Adam knew this was not the case.
