The Socratic form of speech is responsible for his poor reputation and this in turn has led to animosity amongst the jurors. Therefore, if Socrates could justify the practice of the elenctic method either epistemologically and/or morally he could also mitigate their ill feelings towards him.[43] There is no more than a loose thread of justification for elenctic discourse here; anything more systematically put together as a defense was inherited by Plato. Yet, Socrates was not a naïve man ignorant of the ruthlessness with which the common man conducted his affairs, nor was he oblivious to the goalsâand beliefs informing such goalsâamongst the populace. Socrates kicks off his defense in a manner already offensive to the members of the jury and clear on the difficulty of his task. For on the one hand the jurors are forced to acknowledge their profound ignoranceâand Socratesâ relative superiorityâand on the other, they are morally exposed for their frailty and psychologically shown to wallow in self-pity thus harboring resentment for Socrates and thereby frustrating pedagogic instruction. Where Socratic discourse failed so utterly in the past, how could it be expected to succeed now? An answer is subject to how narrowly or broadly âsuccessâ is defined: narrowly it would require acquittal of all charges which Socrates scarcely endeavored whilst more broadly, a pedagogical definition that rests on the didactic aspirations of the Socratic Method requires that the audience is affected in the appropriate way. A defense for the intended pedagogic gains must take issue with the Socratic Method per se; whilst the actual gains would have to take issue with the legacy of Socratic pedagogy as well as ancient testaments upon which the tradition rests.
