Sunday Service

Hilton’s sermon was one of the best he had ever given. He was totally in his element as he walked back and forth across the pulpit. While the church’s numbers had been gradually dwindling over the last two years, he still had a pretty good crowd who was hanging on his every word. It wasn’t until he put the glasses back on that he noticed the woman walking slowly up the aisle toward the pulpit.

She was pointing an accusing finger right at him, and mumbling softly. It seemed the ushers didn’t notice this was out of the norm until she had almost reached him. As she got closer, her voice became louder.

“This is for every woman who has ever been used and abused by a man of faith and then tossed aside like a dirty rag.”

While he could not see her face, there was no mistaking that voice. Hilton’s whole body began to shake. He cast an eye out over the audience and saw that people were beginning to notice that this was not part of the program. Curious eyes were beginning to gaze in the woman’s direction.

“You used me!” the woman shouted again, her voice shaking with anger.

“And then you just threw me away like old garbage.”

She turned to face the audience, her hands clenched in little fists.

“This is not a man of God!” she shouted emphatically.

When Hilton finally looked up to speak, his eyes locked with Vonda’s, and there was no mistaking the scorn on her face.

When Hilton finally woke up, his eyes locked on Vonda’s, and there was no mistaking this was all a dream. He looked over to the digital clock that sat on the nightstand to his left, and realized that it was now time for him to get ready to go to church.
