COPPY HAD A HARD TIME waking Isobell when it was her turn to keep watch, and as soon as she was standing and he was certain she was awake, he stretched out and quickly fell fast asleep.
For the next few hours as she stood watch, Isobell was alone with her thoughts. She had to admit Daniel heard things she didnât hear, and realized she should be more cooperative when he wanted to listen. Of course, that wasnât what really irked her. Of all the things he could have said, why did he claim she was Coppyâs wife and not his? Furthermore, why did she even care?
She cared for Bridgetâs sake, she decided. Danielâs true love would not come with him and therefore, he had turned his wants and his desires on an unsuspecting Bridget. Bridget, who lived all her life hidden away with her father, had no experience in the ways of men, whereas Isobell knew of the cunning and mischief means by which men thought to conquer a woman.
She stopped her pacing when it occurred to her, that Bridget might actually want to be conquered. She looked at the two of them, sleeping side by side and tried to think if Bridget had given any indication that she desired Daniel. She couldnât think of anything specific, save when Bridget tried to convince her to obey Daniel, but that didnât count.
Isobell silently pledged to keep an eye on Bridget from now on. She liked Bridget and truly wished her happiness, but she doubted any woman would find happiness with Daniel. On the other hand, perhaps Daniel was the perfect husband for Bridget. He already knew she was a Macdean and there was no need to worry he would reject her when he found out. Many other men would, she guessed.
By the time Isobell believed it was the end of her watch, she decided a union between Bridget and Daniel was perfect for them both...and she would encourage it.
