CHAPTER FORTY

ADIRA

I would’ve been a fool to pass up the opportunity to get inside Julianna’s apartment. For months I’d been trying to figure out how I could get past security and get to her door, and now it was happening without so much as a hiccup.

The security guard waves at her from his desk as she enters and cuts an eye at me before going back to scrolling through his phone. When we’re in the elevator and riding up, Julianna digs through her purse for her key.

“I know it’s in here somewhere. Ah! Here it is!” She wrenches it out with a smug smile, and the elevator spits us out onto floor seven. Walking to the end of the hallway, she stops in front of apartment 712, unlocks the door with her key, twists the doorknob, and steps inside.

I draw in a shallow breath as I step into the dim confines of her home. Her curtains are drawn together, but she flips a switch to turn on the recessed lighting in the kitchen, then she makes her way across the room to open the curtains, revealing a stunning water view out of the floor-to-ceiling windows.

“Make yourself at home. Cable guy should be here within the next ten minutes or so. Once he’s done, we can go. I’m going to take a shower, if you don’t mind.”

“That’s fine. I’ll wait here.”

“Okay.” She walks around a corner and disappears, and I take slow, methodical steps after her to see she’s entered a bedroom. The bed is large, with a pink duvet and pillows to match, a canopy elegantly draping above. A light gray recliner is against one of the walls, with a fuzzy pink-and-white bunny pillow on top of it. A gold chandelier also hangs from above, the crystal-like droplets shimmering from the sun.

So much pink. I roll my eyes and turn to take in the details of her living room. There’s a TV mounted on the wall, set up beneath an entertainment system with a built-in fireplace. Her sofas are ivory leather, with two pink Sherpa throw blankets tossed over the backs. The accent pieces and mirrors on the wall are brushed with rose gold. It’s vomit-inducing, really—how much pink and rose gold there is. Her floors are marble and polished so well, I can see my reflection.

I run my hands along her square glass dining table, which seats four, and wonder how many dinners she’s had with my husband here. A portrait is on the wall across from me—rose-gold marble, and beneath it is a built-in wet bar with drinks neatly lined up on a clear shelf. It’s all so high-end and luxurious, and I’m curious how a mediocre makeup artist can afford any of this.

Something in the corner of the room catches my eyes. It’s a coatrack. A gray, pleated jacket hangs on it, and my eyes broaden when I realize whose it is. At the bottom of the rack are a pair of dress shoes, placed together neatly and in pristine condition.
