Chapter Ten
Later that evening, the sky darkened and stars sparkled against the dusky-blue dome above me. I stood on the sand, looking out at the dark ocean, realizing how the rhythmic sound of those waves had become precious to me. I had enjoyed the ocean sounds before, with its nearly constant whispers that could turn into a roar within a matter of minutes, but the sounds had never enveloped my heart like they did now.
âNo peeking,â Jackson said.
âI wonât,â I replied, with an anticipatory laugh. I had no idea what heâd been doing down the beach because heâd made me promise not to look. I guessed that it had something to do with the whopper of a fish heâd caught earlier. Heâd taken the fish away to clean it, but then heâd said he had something else to do. Something secret.
I definitely felt intrigued.
Jackson had been bustling around the campsite for a couple of hours now and Iâd heard the distinct sounds of his small ax chopping away. More firewood? I had no clue what he was up to, but Iâd been content to relax and wait at the shore.
The evening had brought a chill to the air and I pulled my sweatshirt tighter around me. There were no signs of a storm coming tonight, which was a very good thing. The tent, the sleeping bag, and the blankets were dry now. They smelled light and airy thanks to the bush theyâd been hung over all day. Inhaling their fresh scent had made me want to use a clothesline instead of a dryer. Then, Iâd be able to hang my bed sheets out to dry. They would smell like fresh air, which would always remind me of my time with Jackson on this island.
Emotions warred inside me. I wanted to be rescued. I really did. I mean, hello? The thought of dying out here was no joke. Shudder. But I also didnât want this time with Jackson to end. Ever. And I knew it would since moving back to the ranch was in his immediate future. So, I tried to live in the moment as I breathed in the wonderful ocean smells all around me. Contentment sank in, filling me completely.
âOkay,â Jackson said. âYou can turn around.â
I turned toward the sound of his voice coming from down the beach. A delighted gasp escaped from my lungs and my hands came together in a spate of applause.
âNo way! You made a table? And chairs?â I hurried through the sand, my bare feet sinking into each step until I stopped at the table with a wide grin. I studied the wooden table, which heâd cleverly stacked, carved, and pieced together out of several logs. A small cup sat in the center of the table, filled with pretty pink flowers. They were the same kind of flowers that graced several bushes along the shore. Two logs served as chairs on either side of the table. âThis is amazing, Jackson. You are a true woodworker.
