EMMANUEL

The talk I had with Heather tonight has sparked a new fire in me. As soon as I got home, I jumped on social media and went to the AWC page. I’ve spent the last hour perusing through it and checking out all the campaigns they have done in the past.

The last update on the page was a year ago and my heart sinks at the possibility that they might not be running the charity anymore. Since the charity doesn’t have an official website, I don’t have direct access to the team members, so social media is my only option. The easiest way to go about this is to ask Dad for the contacts, but I’m not ready for the questions that will follow.

I click on the followers icon and scroll through the names and faces, praying I can recognize at least one person who works for the charity. Mom introduced me to a few members of her team when I went with her to Nigeria. From what I remember, there were a maximum of five members and they didn’t have distinct roles. They all helped each other do everything and anything.

I pause my scrolling after spotting a familiar face—Mr. Dennis Nwaeze. The name doesn’t ring a bell, but the face does. I met him once when Mom took me to their office in Lagos. He took me out for lunch and I had the tastiest abacha and stewed chicken I have ever had in my entire life. Ignoring my now watery mouth and hunger pangs, I click on the man’s name and open the message chat. He’s not online, so I type a quick message.
