On talks about the Soviet Union

Jon: Leo Gruliow, who was an international journalist, spent time in the USSR in the ’30s and ’40s, during World War II, and came back.

Kay: For a while, some of the neighbors—this was ongoing for a couple of years—had a group that was kind of a Soviet-American kind of friendship group. Just neighbors who wanted to learn more about the Soviet Union. And Leo was there to educate people.

Jon: This was around the time the [Berlin] Wall came down. So it was probably ’86 or so.

Kay: So we had a potluck once a month. Get together and talk about what’s happening in the Soviet Union. And what was projected to happen in the case of the disintegration. And pretty much what Leo said would happen has happened. That was kind of an interesting thing that wouldn’t happen in a lot of other neighborhoods.
