Now let’s talk about some ways you can help.

QUICK TIP: If you ever hear someone say “I hate my life” or a similar statement, be sure to let an adult know as soon as you can. Kids who feel this low need support right away.

HELP WITH WORDS

Defend Your Friend

A person who witnesses bullying is called a bystander. As a bystander, you have two choices:

1.Do nothing.

2.Become an upstander by standing up for the target.

Hopefully, you will choose to stand up and be an upstander, rather than just a bystander! If you feel safe, you can speak up and defend the target. You don’t have to say too much to get your point across. Let’s look at two examples, along with what you could say in each situation:

When checking your e-mail, you see a message from LaToya and notice it has been sent to three of your other friends, too. This e-mail makes fun of a new student named Adeelah, who wears a hijab (a headscarf) because of her religious beliefs. You have gotten to know Adeelah for the past two weeks, and this e-mail was not funny to you at all.

You could reply:

•“Please don’t e-mail mean jokes like this to me again.”

•“Adeelah is pretty cool. Maybe you should learn about why she wears it.”

•“I wonder what our teacher will think about this.”
