Chapter Seven

Anna didn’t think she actually believed Anka would send anyone to escort her or really that he would remember it since he’d said he would be taking care of royal duties. She expected him to be overwhelmed with tasks he needed to take care since he hadn’t spent a lot of time … Well, he’d spent most of his time with her since she’d arrived.

And yet she hadn’t been in the king’s bedchamber long, staring out of the window at nothing in particular, when she heard a knock at the door. When she called out an invitation to enter a warrior she’d never seen before stepped into the room and executed something between a bow and a salute.

“I am captain Dugal. His royal highness, Anka le Breesiel sent me to escort his lady.”

His announcement sent a jolt of surprise through Anna.

It shouldn’t have, she realized, but it did.

Because she wasn’t actually accustomed to thinking of Anka as the king.

She’d been mostly insulated from that aspect of him and his life because he had always been informal with her and she’d spent most of her time with him, hadn’t had the chance to really take in the behavior of others toward him.

Except the servant, Maud, who’d looked like she might drop dead of fright when she discovered Anka had overheard her spiteful comments.

“Uh … thank you. You’re sure you don’t mind? It’ll probably be a dead bore for you.”

He looked startled. And confused. “I was sent by the king,” he repeated.

“Oh,” Anna said, thrown into disorder, feeling rebuffed. “Sorry. I didn’t realize … Well, thank you anyway. Even if you didn’t volunteer.”

He issued the bow/salute again and remained rigidly erect by the door.

She stared at him for a long moment before she realized he was waiting for her.

This was going to be seriously awkward, she thought, but she headed to the door, eager to go out for a walk when she’d seen little besides the ceiling since her arrival with an occasional glimpse outside from the windows.

She glanced at him as she swept past him. “Are you allowed to talk … to me?”

He flushed, his dark skin turning darker still and a bit more red. “Yes, Lady.”

“Anna.”

He nodded. “Lady Anna.”

She was about to correct him, but she thought it might make him uncomfortable. “I’m not sure of where I’m allowed to go?” she said tentatively.

“Anywhere you like, Lady … Anna.”

“Oh … You don’t have to call me Anna if it seems awkward. Do you know when the castle was built? It is absolutely amazing.”

He frowned. “I do not.”

“Oh. Well. That’s disappointing. Did Anka build it? Or, have it built, I guess?”

“He did not.”

Anna waited but he didn’t volunteer anything. “Maybe his father?”

“I was not born then. I do not know.”

“Well, whoever built it or had it built whenever it was built—the engineering is just amazing. And the skill of the builders.”

He nodded agreement and then immediately made it clear that he didn’t know what she was talking about. “What is
