Throwing back some painkillers, Sara lay on the bed for a while. The radio interview had been exhausting. Trying to be smart and funny. Trying to be somebody else. It left her empty of everything except a headache. And she hadn’t meant to mention the merchandise — she’d been carried away by the momentum of the interview. Bernard rang afterwards, furious that she’d gone on about gardening gloves and the cookbook. Just stick to the blogs, okay? And the book on Italian gardens.

Thank goodness Medora wasn’t around. She would have made weird faces, been scathing about Bernard’s schemes to commercialise Edith. Sara was trying to hide Bernard’s more ambitious ideas (the cookbook) while tacitly encouraging him. Of course she was. With no blogging project, there was no Medora.

Feeling on edge, Sara opened her laptop. In Austen’s absence, she could check the internet. Typing Medora into the search field, she waited. Medora: a town in Billings County, North Dakota, population 112.

She thought for a moment, then tried Medora, New Zealand. A documentary on the Medora basketball team had screened at an international film festival. And a schooner called Medora sailed into the Auckland port in September 1879. Sara was aware of prevarication, a deliberate postponing of her real intention. Now she tried Medora Edith Wharton.
