KLOEY CLARKE

Mommy and Daddy had been arguing less. What I meant by that was, they still argued in the morning, followed up by make-up sex, but at night the arguments were becoming less and less. It was a small start, but I’d take it.

Once they left, I usually got my day started. After some sort of prayer or meditation, which I skipped if I was too busy, I did any last-minute homework, showered, got myself together, and either went to school or to work. That had pretty much been my routine for the last year. As badly as I wanted to date. My mind was only on my money and my education.

“Hey!” Lesci sang when I let her in.

“Hey, girl.”

“I’m returning your outfit. Did you know you had some money inside the pocket?”

“How is that possible when it was new? It still had the tags on it.”

“I’m not sure, but the money ain’t mine.”

“How much is it?”

“Looks like three hundred dollars,” she said, pulling the money out of her pocket and tossing it on my bed.

I was in the process of making the bed so she kinda messed me up. “You found it. You keep it.”

“But I want to give it to you. It’s yours.”

“Why?”

“Because this is your outfit, not mine.”

“I still don’t understand why, when you need the money as badly as I do.”

“But you need it more.”

“I’m not taking no handouts if that’s what you’re trying to do.”

“No. That’s not it.”

“It sounds like it. How many times do I have to tell you that I don’t need your money?”

“But it’s not mine—”

I tucked the cover under the mattress and stood up straight, facing my bestie. Standing eye to eye with her beautiful face, I spoke sternly. “I love you, Lesci, but I can’t take this money from you.”

She sighed and looked sad. I’d never met someone who was so selfless. She was always trying to give me money, and I had to turn her down. I wasn’t a user, and I didn’t enjoy feeling like one. Even if I needed the money, I was raised to find a way, no matter what. Another reason I turned her down was that someone had been making payments on my medical bills, and I suspected it was her. I asked her, and she said she didn’t do it, but I know she had something to do with it. If that was the case, she’d already done too much.

“I’m not handicapped, you know.”

“I know,” she agreed. “I just—”

“You just nothing.”

I sat on my bed, picked my book bag up from the floor, and cracked it open with my back against my headboard.

“Is your homework done?” I asked.

“Yes, but I want to finish the conversation we were just having—”

“I don’t. I know you’re worried, but I’m good. I’ve picked up a few more clients. Today, I’ll be walking four dogs.”

“I still don’t understand how you can pick up shit in a bag.” She twisted her face, sticking out her tongue in disgust.

“It’s not that bad, but I was hoping to have the job at the casino by now.
